A reminder of the sacred power of intercessory prayer, of loving someone so deeply that we kneel before God on their behalf.

Why I Stayed on My Knees for 2 Hours Straight

Shared with permission — written by Scott Savage

In my early 20s, I experienced God move through my prayers like never before. A close friend was going through a brutal, toxic breakup. She wanted to put boundaries in place but struggled to keep them. She asked me to pray for her, so we went into this tiny chapel on our campus and prayed for fifteen minutes.

She left to meet with the person she was trying to separate from. I decided I’d stay behind and pray for “a little while longer.”

Truthfully, fifteen minutes was already long for me. But after another five or ten minutes on my knees, I felt my “obligation” was met. I was ready to get up—when something incredible happened.

An invisible hand pushed me gently back down.

Twice more I tried to rise, and twice more I felt that same gentle pressure keeping me on my knees. I ended up praying for two hours straight.

The next day, I checked on my friend. She told me she’d had her life-changing conversation right outside the building where I was praying. She said:

“Knowing you were praying for me gave me the strength I needed to stay strong.”

When we love people enough to pray for them, who knows how God will move?

The Power of Intercession

You may have someone heavy on your heart today. Someone hurting. Someone struggling. Someone making destructive decisions. Someone you love deeply.

Those feelings lead us to intercede—to stand in the gap between them and God.

Richard Foster said:

“If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is within our power to give them, which will lead us to prayer. Intercession is a way of loving others.”

There are limits to what we can do. We cannot fix others. We cannot choose for them. We cannot change their circumstances by force.

But we can pray. We pray to tell God we love them. We pray to admit our limits. We pray to declare that He is able.

Paul wrote:

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

Sometimes the most powerful way to carry a burden is to kneel under it on someone else’s behalf.

George Müller recorded over 50,000 answered prayers in his lifetime— 30,000 on the very day he prayed them. He documented them to encourage believers:

“You can experience the same if you will pray as I have prayed.”

God still answers prayer. Even now. Even in the hardest circumstances.

What Can We Do With This?

If this message hits home, here are steps you can take:

  1. Reflect on what—or who—God is placing on your heart.
  2. Pray for them as an act of love.
  3. Remember that your limits are real, but God’s limits do not exist.
  4. Trust that prayer is not the least you can do—it is often the most.

Jeanna’s Reflection

Intercession is holy work. It’s love in action. It’s kneeling in the gap when someone else can’t stand on their own.

Sometimes God keeps us on our knees—not to weaken us but to strengthen someone else through us. And sometimes, He keeps us there because He knows that’s where we’ll hear Him best.

Lord, teach us to pray for the people we love. Teach us to kneel when You nudge us. Teach us to trust that You’re moving even when we can’t see it.

Amen.
